New Media Faculty Seminar: Murray reading
How fitting that, as a critic, I begin the discussion of the New Media readings with a complaint. While I really like Murray’s emphasis on the significance of the rhizome, it bothers me that while choosing her structuring metaphors she ignores something the anthology itself includes: the graphic medium. Comics, as the McCloud excerpt neatly demonstrates, are always already “new” in their exploitation of the tensions between text and image. As a student of the genre I find the elision of its significance typical of most scholarship, but baffling here. Not only is print not dead, it is blazing a trail as far as hybridity is concerned.
